Medellín (Colombia)

STORY: Heavy rains in Medellin, Colombia on Friday (October 9) caused multiple emergencies across the city, with the overflowing of a stream forcing evacuations and flooding homes.

Acting Mayor Manuel Villa Mejia said more than 200 personnel were deployed to critical points, working in coordination between firefighters, the Administrative Department of Disaster Risk Management (DAGRD), mobility and environment secretaries, and social commissions.

The rising stream waters flooded streets and damaged multiple homes in the sector, though water levels later receded. Official firefighters and district technical and social teams remained on site to assess stream conditions and establish the full extent of damage caused by the flooding.

Especially, the increase in the level of La Iguana stream was what generated flooding in some roads and damage to some homes. The stream level has already dropped, but our social commission is on the ground with the families to provide them with all the support that is required."
