S003-VENEZUELA TERREMOTO SITUACION SUPERVIVIENTES
Looting was reported in La Guaira, Venezuela, after two earthquakes struck the country, with shops, warehouses and supermarkets targeted in Catia La Mar on Friday (June 26).
Reuters footage showed groups entering damaged commercial buildings and taking food, water and clothing. Some volunteers said police appeared to intervene mainly when non-essential items or vehicle parts were being taken, and that officers looked away when disaster victims took basic supplies.
Acting president Delcy Rodriguez announced on Friday (June 26) that military forces would be deployed in La Guaira, saying the government state will be "militarized" to facilitate rescue work, and 2,600 tons of food had been distributed there.
