S003-PERU PROTESTA CONTRA LA CORRUPCION
Generation Z protesters and representatives of transport workers took to the streets of Lima on Friday (November 14) to demand political reform and measures to address insecurity and corruption in the country.
The march, which was blocked by a line of police with shields from reaching Congress, came three weeks after Peruvian President Jose Jeri declared a state of emergency in the capital and the neighbouring province of Callao.
Jeri was sworn in last month following the ouster of former President Dina Boluarte, and vowed to make tackling crime a top priority.
Protesters on the march, however, demanded further action.
“It is the duty of young people to protect the country, not the elderly. We are the voice of the people,” said Juan Gutierrez.
The state of emergency is currently set to expire on November 20.
