S003-PAKISTAN MUERTOS EXPLOSION
A blast in a house where wedding celebrations were underway killed at least five people and injured at least 10 others in the northwestern Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan late on Friday (January 23), rescue officials said.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Rescue 1122 said the 10 injured people were taken to the hospital.
The explosion occurred during a wedding at the residence of the Dera Ismail Khan Peace Committee (surrendered Taliban) chief identified as Noor Alam Mehsud, local media reported.
The director of Dera Ismail Khan Hospital, Farrukh Jamil, had earlier said doctors had received three dead bodies and seven injured people.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
Pakistan's northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Dera Ismail Khan is located, has battled a resurgence of militant violence carried out primarily by the Islamist militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
The Pakistani government has blamed the Afghan Taliban for providing a safe haven to TTP militants, saying they use Afghan soil to plan their strikes on targets in Pakistan.
The Afghan government has denied the charges, saying Pakistan's security is an internal problem.
