La Habana (Cuba)

Cuba's communist-run government on Friday (February 6) detailed a wide-ranging plan to protect essential services and ration fuel, digging in its heels in defiance of a U.S. move to cut off oil supply to the Caribbean island.

A swath of measures promise to guarantee fuel supply for rice and agricultural production, education, healthcare and defence, according to several high level officials who spoke on a television news program.

"We will guarantee the sustainability of income-generating sectors.

REPORTER SAYING: "That is very important."

PEREZ OLIVA: "And this is important because without income, we cannot overcome the situation. Therefore, a plan has been designed in the tourism sector to reduce energy consumption, consolidate tourist facilities, and take advantage of the current high season in our country, which is yielding encouraging results, even surpassing those of the previous year. In other words.

REPORTER ASKING: Despite all the campaigns against us?

PEREZ OLIVA: Despite everything they have said—claiming that we would be collapsing, that we are collapsing today—perhaps they are not explaining it correctly. We are not going to collapse because the Cuban people do not collapse, and they have proven this throughout their history.

“There are employment modalities with us that have grown significantly in recent years, especially those related to telework and remote work. We are talking about adjusting work schedules. I believe that the heads of each entity must achieve an adjustment of work schedules where necessary and possible, with special emphasis on reallocation. Now, we must seek to reallocate our workers so they continue to contribute to the country’s economic and social activities, especially in basic services for the population, food production, agricultural work, and activities that allow us to contribute to the country’s economic and social life.”
