Footage from Gaza City on Saturday (May 16) showed damage in the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike on a residential building.

Gaza medics said at least seven Palestinians, including a child, were killed in airstrikes on Friday (May 15), with dozens more wounded.

Israel said it had targeted Izz al-Din al-Haddad, head of Hamas’ armed wing in Gaza, describing him as a key figure behind the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. It was not immediately known whether he was killed.

Hamas did not immediately comment.

Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said the strike hit a residential building housing large numbers of civilians.

Some 850 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the October ceasefire, according to figures that ⁠do not distinguish between combatants and civilians. Four Israeli soldiers were killed by militants during the same period. Hamas does not disclose figures for casualties among its fighters.

"Unfortunately, every day they say there's a ceasefire and we're close to finding a solution but these are all lies. In reality, the situation is extremely bad in Gaza in all aspects, we are surprised with a strike on a civilian car, a strike on people walking on the street. Last night, we were surprised with a strike on a residential apartment and only God knows what's next. The Jews (Israelis) are liars and they don't want to find a solution."
