STORY: Election workers in Colorado's Adams and Weld counties sorted, scanned and opened mail ballots this week, days before the November 3 midterm elections in one of the most competitive U.S. House races in the country.

Parts of both counties are in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, where Republican Representative Gabe Evans is defending the seat against Democrat Manny Rutinel. Evans unseated Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo in 2024 by fewer than 2,500 votes.

Colorado mails a ballot to every active registered voter.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked mail-in voting. In March he signed an executive order directing the Postal Service to restrict delivery of mail ballots, but the Supreme Court on Sept. 14 blocked the new rules from taking effect for the midterms, leaving states to run mail voting under existing procedures.

Evidence of widespread fraud in mail voting is rare. Trump himself has voted by mail in the past and urged supporters to do so in 2024. About 3 in 10 ballots nationwide were cast by mail in the 2024 general election.
