STORY: A shark mauled a woman swimmer at Coogee Beach, Sydney, on Saturday (June 13), leaving her seriously injured — the latest in a series of attacks off the Australian coast.

Swimmers who train regularly at Coogee Beach said Saturday's shark attack left them "in shock". Michelle Donoghoe, a Coogee local, said the victim had been bitten in a spot they used routinely.

Emergency services were called to the beach, in east of Sydney, after the 35-year-old was bitten by a large shark about 30 metres (100 feet) from the shore. Coogee Beach and neighbouring beaches in the Randwick council area were closed for 24 hours.

A week earlier, a man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of Western Australia state, in the latest fatal incident.

Last month, a 39-year-old man died after being attacked while fishing on Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. Ten days earlier, a 38-year-old was fatally mauled off an island near Perth in Western Australia.

And then other rescue craft went into the water after that.”
