Two freight trains crashed in Munich on the early hours of Saturday (June 20) morning causing two of the carriages to crash to the ground below, a local fire brigade spokesman said.

According to emergency services one person was seriously injured.

"At around 1.40 am (2340gmt) today, we were called out to a train accident in which two trains appear to have collided, derailed and, in part, fallen off a bridge," Munich fire brigade spokesman Johannes Schorer said.

Some 60 emergency services initially attended the scene but were downgraded later as the crash site was secured.

The cause of the crash was still unknown, recovery of the crashed train was expected to last up to several days.

As things stand at present, we unfortunately have to report that one person has been seriously injured. The police are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident."

"When we received the call-out reporting that a train had crashed, it was naturally assumed an extremely serious incident, so around 60 emergency personnel were initially dispatched here, but they have now been gradually withdrawn."

"So we’re here on Schleißheimer Straße and behind us we can see a railway overpass, the last of the freight rail station. That’s why the carriages lying on the road are freight carriages. So no passenger train was involved in the accident."

"Recovery operations and the accident investigation are still ongoing; the police and the fire brigade are on site and working with a large team, but we can expect the recovery to take several more hours, perhaps even days, and Schleißheimer Straße will therefore definitely remain closed until further notice."
