S001-TAIWAN SUPERA TIFON BAVI QUE SE DIRIGE A CHINA

Taipéi (Taiwán)

STORY: Residents ventured out to markets in drizzly rain and gusty winds in the northern Taiwanese port city of Keelung on Saturday (July 11) as Typhoon Bavi moved westward toward China.

Keelung fruit vendor Ms. Lin, 48, said she and her husband decided conditions were not severe enough to disrupt business. They left at 1:30 a.m. local time (1730 GMT) to restock fruit and began setting up their stall at around 4 a.m. (2000 GMT).

Chiang Fu-chu, 71, said she had been worried about the approaching typhoon but ventured out after finding conditions less severe than expected. She walked to the market to buy food for her daughter and grandsons, who were visiting from Hsinchu.

Despite the relatively calm mood among residents in Keelung, Bavi continued to generate large waves along Taiwan's coastline.

In Taipei's Beitou district, nestled in the foothills surrounding the capital, wind gusts of up to 100 kph (60 mph) toppled trees and caused rivers to swell.

Even as Bavi continues to slow and weaken on its northwesterly path over cooler seas, the typhoon is still a potent risk due to the sheer volume of moisture it holds within its rain bands, about the size of France from end to end.

Bavi is forecast to make landfall around Wenzhou, home to some 10 million people, in the early hours of Sunday.

"Of course I'm scared. It's just that it (typhoon) doesn't seem too bad at the moment. It's much better than the previous ones, which is why I've dared to come out. The wind and rain aren't nearly as severe."

"I was out at 1:30 a.m. this morning. It wasn't raining, so I told my husband to go and restock the supplies. I came here arranging the stand at around 4 a.m. There are fewer people today because of the typhoon. The rain hasn't been too heavy and the wind hasn't been too strong, so it's been all right. Most people (vendors) haven't come out to set up their stalls, but I'm a bit more hardworking. Every little bit helps, so I carry on working when I can."
