Displaced Palestinians in Gaza headed back towards their abandoned homes on Saturday (October 11) a day after a ceasefire took effect and Israeli troops began pulling back under the first phase of an agreement to end the war.

People carried belongings and pushed carts as they headed towards Gaza City, the enclave's biggest urban area, which had been under attack just days ago in one of Israel's biggest offensives of the war.

The Israeli military said the ceasefire agreement had been activated on Friday (October 10) noon local time (0900 GMT).

Hamas is expected to release 20 living Israeli hostages, after which Israel will release 250 Palestinians serving long terms in Israeli prisons, as well as 1,700 others detained in Gaza during the war.

Trump said the hostages are due to "come back" on Monday.
