S001-EEUU PROTESTAS ICE NUEVA JERSEY
Police fired tear gas at protesters outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark on Friday (May 29) as clashes escalated during demonstrations over conditions at the center.
Video showed law enforcement officers advancing in formation, pushing protesters and reporters back. The situation intensified as officers deployed tear gas canisters.
The unrest comes after several nights of protests at the facility, which is operated by private prison company GEO Group. Demonstrators have included lawmakers, families of detainees and advocacy groups.
Earlier on Friday, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said authorities would establish designated protest zones near the site to ease tensions and maintain public safety, as officials warned of growing crowds and the potential for further clashes.
Separately, Sherrill ordered state police to take control outside the facility, calling it a step to quell escalating tensions and violence.
State police also moved to set up protected protest zones and checkpoints, while ICE agents agreed to withdraw from the immediate area.
