Hurricane Isaias weakened to a Category 1 storm on Friday (October 9), rapidly losing wind speed after hitting the Florida coast, the US National Hurricane Center said, while warning of storm surges and snapped power lines as it moves through the Deep South.

Footage from the Englewood Area Fire Control District showed some residents struggling to move their vehicles stuck in sand as waves washed over their coastal community ahead of the hurricane's landfall on Friday.

Reuters verified the location of the footage from buildings, electricity poles, road signs, road layout and trees which matched file and satellite images in the area. The date was verified by government reports that Manasota Key Road in Englewood, Florida was closed due to waves washing over the road. The US National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Isaias made landfall in western Florida panhandle, warning of danger from storm surges and floods.

The hurricane was about 65 miles (105 km) west-northwest of Panama City, Florida, packing maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph), the NHC said in an advisory.

Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, is expected to continue weakening but produce gusty winds well inland through Saturday even after it becomes post-tropical, the NHC said.
