La Haya, Países Bajos

Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders' PVV party left the governing coalition on Tuesday, in a move that is set to topple the right wing government and will likely lead to new elections.

Wilders said his coalition partners were not willing to support his ideas on halting asylum migration.

He said he had informed Prime Minister Dick Schoof that all ministers from his PVV party would quit the government. Schoof has not yet reacted to the resignation.

Wilders' surprise move ends an already fragile coalition which has struggled to reach any consensus since its installation last July.

It will likely bring new elections in a few months, adding to political uncertainty in the euro zone's fifth-largest economy.

It will likely also delay a decision on a possibly historic increase in defence spending to meet new NATO targets.

And it will leave the Netherlands with only a caretaker government when it receives NATO country leaders for a summit to decide on these targets in The Hague later this month.

1. (SOUNDBITE) (Dutch) DUTCH FAR-RIGHT LEADER OF PVV PARTY, GEERT WILDERS, SAYING:

"As you know, the PVV promised the voters the strictest asylum policy ever and the strictest policy among the strictest countries in Europe. We have proposed a plan to close the borders to asylum seekers, to stop them, to send them away, to no longer build AZCs (reception centres for asylum seekers) but to close them, to give the Netherlands a stricter policy and to ensure that the Netherlands does not become one big asylum seekers' centre. I have presented a plan for that, I think you were there. I have requested the signature of the coalition partners - former coalition partners I should say - at least for the majority of those measures. They didn't do that. They say, 'well, submit it or maybe we can submit a motion to investigate it, or ask your minister to make something.' But that is of course no guarantee that something will get through a cabinet or the House of Representatives. So I could do nothing else now than to say we withdraw our support for this cabinet.'

"I also just informed the prime minister that I will withdraw the PVV ministers from the cabinet and that we can no longer bear responsibility for this. I signed for the strictest asylum policy, not for the downfall of the Netherlands. And our responsibility for this cabinet therefore also ends at this moment."

5. (SOUNDBITE) (Dutch) DUTCH FAR-RIGHT LEADER OF PVV PARTY, GEERT WILDERS, SAYING:

"We wanted a stricter asylum policy, more than stated in the main (coalition government) agreement. You can also see that many countries in the European Union, Austria, Poland, Germany, Belgium, are going to take further measures. The main agreement also stated that we would be among the strictest countries in Europe in terms of admission. We have not been doing that for a long time, so I also think that this tightening is completely in line with the outline government agreement. The fact that (the other coalition partners) did not sign this is therefore actually a conflict with the government agreement."
