Fauja Singh, a British-Indian believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, died on Monday (July 14) after being struck by a vehicle in India.

Singh was hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing a road in his native village Beas Pind in Punjab, India, and died at a local hospital, according to media reports.

He was recorded by the Olympics as the first centenarian and the oldest man to have completed a full marathon at the age of 100 in 2011.

Singh claimed to be born in Punjab, then under British India rule, on April 1, 1911, which would make him 114 years-old at the time of his death on Monday. But he does not have a birth certificate as India did not keep records then.

He began running at 89, completing nine full marathons between 2000 and 2013, as well as setting several records across multiple age categories.

Singh was also a torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympics.
