SHOWS: A wildfire broke out near residential areas in Turkey's southern province of Hatay on Monday (June 30), as more fires raged in the country's west. In Hatay, some 1,500 people were evacuated from three neighbourhoods and more than 60 houses were affected by the fire, Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatli said, according to Anadolu. "Temperatures like these are not great for humans and animals, that's true. Of course, there are animals that can cope with it without any problems, especially many antelope species. They have no problem at all if the thermometer gets up to 45 degrees (Celsius). But 37/38 degrees (Celsius) I think we can cope with that, especially if the animals have bathing facilities or showers. And sometimes the stable is simply the coolest place where the animals can retreat to."

Residents of a Belgian retirement home cooled their feet in a dipping pool on Monday (June 30), as a heatwave hit Europe. Windows were kept shut, the garden was ruled out of bounds, and gymnastics classes were cancelled at the Ter Biest home in Grimbergen, north of Brussels, as temperatures climbed. "We notice that they (the residents) are struggling. First of all, because they cannot go outside anymore during the afternoon, because it's too hot, and many residents here enjoy going outside. As a result they feel a bit locked up here. Also, when we look at our weaker residents, we notice that they are suffering from the heat. They are moving less, sleeping more or we see that they are not feeling well. So yes, the high temperatures have mental and physical consequences."
Britons endured intense heat across parts of the country on Monday (June 30), with temperatures reaching 33 degrees Celsius in the capital London. Temperatures were expected to peak on Tuesday at around 34 C, Britain's national meteorological service said. (6223-EUROPE-WEATHER/BRITAIN)

"It's really hot. It's definitely a little bit challenging, I would say, in terms of just because there's not necessarily a big breeze. It's like you can handle hot weather, but when it's not breezy, that makes it, like, kind of compounded where you're like, 'woah.' And then, I don't know, you just have to hydrate really well."

As extreme temperatures gripped Southern Europe on Monday (June 30), an expert warned that such heatwaves are likely to become more frequent due to climate change. The current heatwave is due to a weather phenomenon called a "heat dome," said Kirsty McCabe, meteorologist at the Royal Meteorological Society. (6171-EUROPE-WEATHER/ANALYST)

23. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SENIOR BROADCAST METEOROLOGIST AT THE ROYAL METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY, KIRSTY MCCABE, SAYING:
"The main reason we've got really high temperatures across southern Europe at the moment is due to something called a heat dome and that's where we've got an area of high pressure that's got blocked, and with high pressure, the air is descending and when air is descending, it means that we're not going to see any clouds forming, we're not going to see any unsettled weather, but we are tending to see the air getting trapped. And when the air is sinking, it warms, which is something called adiabatic warming as well. And we end up with a situation where day on day, if the high pressure gets stuck where it is, which is what's happening, we get homegrown heating adding to that. So we've already got high temperatures because of the time of year, but the longer the high pressure stays in place, the temperatures keep rising day by day because the heat dome is almost acting like the lid in a pot, and it's trapping that hot air underneath it."
Britons went to the beach in the coastal city of Brighton on Sunday (June 29). A heat health warning issued by the UK Health Security Agency for parts of the country was expected to remain in effect until Wednesday (July 2). (6223-EUROPE-WEATHER/BRITAIN)
