M609-IRAN ATASCO SALIDA TEHERAN
STORY: Congested traffic was seen on the Karaj-chalus road moving westward from Tehran in social media footage shared on Monday (June 16).
The footage showed brake lights of hundreds of vehicles stuck in gridlock in the direction of Iran's Karaj, just west of Tehran.
Reuters was able to geolocate the footage from buildings and road layout as seen on file and satellite images. Reuters was not able to confirm when the footage was filmed.
Israel launched its air war on Friday (June 13) with a surprise attack that killed nearly the entire top echelon of Iran's military commanders and its leading nuclear scientists. It says it now has control of Iranian airspace and intends to escalate the campaign in coming days.
The conflict entered its fifth day on Tuesday (June 17), with air raid sirens sounding in Tel Aviv shortly after midnight as Iran launched missiles toward Israel.
