STORY: Clashes between riot police and protesters continued on Monday (July 14) amid unrest in Spain’s southeastern Torre Pacheco.

Masked demonstrators identifying as residents filled the streets, as armed police officers fired rubber bullets in a bid to quell the unrest that spilled into Tuesday morning (July 15).

“We just want justice, we just want to be left alone, we want to live in peace, for our neighbourhood to be in peace and for our city to live in peace,” said one unidentified demonstrator.

Spanish police have arrested 10 people after three nights of clashes between far-right groups and North African migrants in a town in southeastern Spain, the government said on Monday.

The trouble stemmed from an attack last week on a man in his late 60s that left him injured and recovering at home.

An Interior Ministry spokesperson told Reuters late on Monday that the suspected main perpetrator in last week's attack has been arrested in the northern Basque Country. Authorities had previously said they had detained two foreigners suspected of involvement in the assault.

Migrants, many of them second-generation, make up about a third of Torre Pacheco's population of about 40,000.
