STORY: Police in Austin, Texas dispersed and arrested protesters demonstrating against the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies on Monday (June 9) night.

According to local media reports, the Texas protests were being held in solidarity with those in Los Angeles, which were sparked by immigration raids in Southern California. Footage carried by local U.S. broadcasters showed police firing tear gas canisters at what appeared to be around a dozen protesters in Austin.

Aerial footage in Texan city of Dallas also showed protesters facing off with a line of police.

Tensions have been rising since Trump activated the National Guard on Saturday (June 8) in response to the street protests in Los Angeles. It is the biggest flashpoint yet in the Trump administration's aggressive efforts to deport migrants living in the country illegally.

On Monday, as the Los Angeles protests entered their fourth consecutive day, it was announced that a further 700 Marines will be deployed to Los Angeles until more National Guard troops can arrive.

“We were just out there peacefully protesting, we were not being aggressive towards the cops at all, we were just protesting as normal, and they came, they barricaded us in, and eventually they, well they arrested a couple people and then started throwing mace at us, they started spraying people with mace, eventually they threw about ten tear gas canisters flooding the whole street with tear gas.. they just became very aggressive, we were not being aggressive, and then they just got aggressive. When they decided it was over, they just pushed us, and used a lot of force, and I mean, assaulted us, arrested a couple people.”
