Thousands of police officers protested in central Paris on Tuesday (September 15) calling for better pay and conditions.

Loic Travers, the deputy secretary-general of the 'Alliance' police union, said officers were calling for an immediate pay increase of 7% and an increase to their 'risk bonus', a supplement paid to workers dealing with difficult or dangerous conditions in France.

The protest was part of a wider day of strikes and protests on Tuesday, including the energy and fishing sectors.

French workers are fighting for higher pay and bracing for austerity measures as the government attempts to get the national budget under control.

"We are clear. What we are asking for is a salary increase of 7%, at minimum immediately and above all a revaluation of our risk bonus. Today, our risk bonus represents 28.5% of our gross salary and we want it to go up to 35%. That is not negotiable."

So in fact we have no choice but to show our strength in the street. It is quite rare since we do not have the right to strike. So now, the colleagues came on their time off, came quite simply in solidarity with all their colleagues across France. And I am one of their representatives at the national level."
