M069-NOUREGA HIJO MARIA CORINA ASISTE NOBEL
The son of Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Maria Corina Machado, said on Tuesday (December 9) that he was emotional and proud, ahead of the award ceremony.
“Very emotional and very proud,” Ricardo Machado said when asked how he was feeling, as he was out walking in a park near the Norwegian parliament and the Grand Hotel where Nobel guests are traditionally staying.
Uncertainty remains over whether Corina Machado, awarded the 2025 prize for her fight against dictatorship in Venezuela, will attend to accept the honour in person.
A press conference scheduled for Tuesday (December 9) at 1200 GMT was postponed without explanation and no new timing has been announced.
Ricardo Machado would not comment on whether his mother would come to Oslo to pick up the prize herself.
Machado, a 58-year-old industrial engineer who lives in hiding, was blocked in 2024 by Venezuela's courts from running for president and thus challenging President Nicolas Maduro, who has been in power since 2013.
Ricardo’ sister Ana Corina Sosa Machado and grand-mother Corina Perez De Machado both arrived in the Norwegian capital on Monday (December 8)
The prize ceremony will take place at Oslo City Hall on Wednesday (December 10).
