Britain's Queen Camilla hosted some highly-trained cancer detection specialists and their handlers at royal resident Clarence House in London, on Tuesday (May 12).

Camilla met two labradors, furry representatives of the Medical Detection Dogs charity for a reception and demonstration of their cancer-sniffing skills.

One of them, 11-year old Floren, a fox red labrador, is trained to detect prostate cancer and the other, 9-year old Jodie a light coated golden labrador, is trained to find the disease in the bowel.

The charity's CEO, Claire Guest, introduced the queen to charity trustees and employees before the demonstration where Floren sniffed urine samples.

According to its website, the charity trains assistance dogs to help alert people to medical events as well as training biodetection dogs to detect the odours of difference cancers and other illnesses from samples.

There have been several studies on dogs' olfactory ability to detect cancer including a large-scale clinical study in the UK using 9 dogs and testing 3,000 patients to check prostate, bladder and kidney cancer in 2015.

Results have varied leading the Cancer Research UK group to say ten years ago "it’s certainly a nice idea – man’s best friend sniffing out tumours. But although these small research studies show that dogs could have the potential to pick up cancer, their accuracy is questionable."

Queen Camilla is the patron of the charity.
