M063-LIBANO ATAQUES ISRAEL
Outgoing projectiles were seen in Beirut southern suburbs’ skyline in the early hours of Tuesday (March 3) as fighting between Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Israel intensified.
The U.S. and Israeli air war against Iran widened on Monday (March 2), with no end in sight as Israel attacked Lebanon in response to strikes by Hezbollah and Tehran kept up its attacks on Gulf states that host U.S. military bases.
The Israeli military said on Monday it had struck a senior Hezbollah militant in Beirut, without providing further details. Earlier Israel declared Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem a "target for elimination."
Officials said they were not for now considering a ground invasion of Lebanon, whose government on Monday banned military activities by Hezbollah.
Smoke from Israeli strikes billowed from different locations in southern Lebanon on Tuesday (March 3).
Lebanon was pulled deeper into the war in the Middle East on Tuesday as the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel for a second consecutive day and Israel sent troops into the south and carried out waves of air strikes.
Israel's neighbour to the north and the theatre of numerous conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanon had avoided spillover from the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran until Monday (March 2), when Hezbollah opened fire with drones and missiles.
The Israeli military said it had deployed additional forces to southern Lebanon overnight, saying this was to take up defensive positions to guard against any potential Hezbollah attack.
Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement he had authorised the military to advance and take control of additional positions.
The Israeli military on Monday night ordered residents of the entire border strip of southern Lebanon to evacuate.
