New York City Police Department bodycam footage showed police officers arriving in Manhattan's Marble Hill neighborhood and transporting an injured man to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital after US immigration agents shot him on Thursday (October 8).

Authorities identified the man as Oscar Belgal. Belgal's attorneys incorrectly spelled their client's last name as "Bergal" in official court filings, an error confirmed by a spokesperson for Make the Road New York, who said the filings would be amended.

His 5-year-old son was in the back seat of his car at the time of the shooting, according to police.

US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the agents on Friday (October 9), saying they did not know the child was in the car when they opened fire.

Senior ICE official Marcos Charles said Belgal refused to exit his car, struck two ICE vehicles and drove toward other officers. Charles said Belgal suffered a superficial neck wound and was being held in a detention facility outside New York state.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting an “outrage.”
