Russian missiles killed 10 people and wounded at least 18 others in the village of Pechenihy in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region on Tuesday (August 18), authorities said.

Several bodies were seen covered with foil lying near damaged buildings and burnt-out vehicles while police and medics worked at the scene.

Local resident and shop owner Yana Chelombytko told Reuters she survived only because she had stayed home by chance when the missiles struck.

Chelombytko said cars burst into flames and residents shouted out names as they searched for missing relatives and neighbours.

She added that the strike destroyed her cafe and shop and killed a friend who worked at the cafe, as well as an employee who had been displaced from the frontline town of Vovchansk.

Oleksandr Husarov, head of the Pechenihy village military administration, said two Russian Banderol missiles hit less than a minute apart after the first strike at 8:30 a.m. He said the missiles struck the centre of the settlement, a busy area containing shops, a post office and cafes where residents were beginning their workday. Russia did not immediately comment on the attack. Both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians in the war.
