STORY: Palestinians in Gaza City held on Tuesday (July 29) funerals for people killed in an Israeli attack. Local clansmen and medics say the victims were trying to protect aid trucks.

Members of clans had volunteered to escort UN trucks of aid to ensure they don’t get looted and that they’re properly distributed among people, they explained.

Israel cut off aid to Gaza from the start of March in what it said was a means to pressure Hamas into giving up dozens of hostages it still holds, and reopened aid with new restrictions in May. Hamas accuses Israel of using hunger as a weapon.

There was no immediate Israeli comment on the incident.

Israel has regularly said it takes steps to avoid hitting civilians. Israel has consistently said its actions are justified as self-defence. It says the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which ruled Gaza, is to blame for refusing to release hostages and surrender, and for operating in civilian areas, which Hamas denies.

Israel's military offensive on the Gaza Strip has killed at least 60,000 mostly civilian Palestinians since Oct. 7, 2023, the enclave's health ministry said on Tuesday.

The war began after Gaza's dominant Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out a cross-border attack on southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.
