M057-VENEZUELA EQUIPOS DE RESCATE
Rescue teams searched through rubble in Venezuela's La Guaira on Tuesday (June 30) days after two earthquakes struck killing hundreds in the hardest-hit state.
Venezuela's healthcare system is under significant strain, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday, with some hospitals damaged and others missing staff after deadly twin earthquakes last week.
More than 1,700 people have been killed and 5,000 injured after hundreds of buildings were flattened or damaged by the back-to-back 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude quakes.
On the fifth day of rescue efforts, the government tally showed nearly 200 buildings completely flattened and several hundred severely damaged. The rising toll of casualties - including 5,000 injured - was likely exacerbated by decades of neglect, poor building code enforcement and shoddy licensing practices under past leaders Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro, experts said.
