M057-GAZA ENTIERRO 112 MIEMBROS MISMA FAMILIA
Palestinians in Gaza City buried on Tuesday (August 4) the remains of 112 members of the same extended family, nearly three years after they were killed in Israeli strikes.
The mostly decomposed bodies were wrapped in Palestinian flags and laid on the ground in an open field where houses once stood in Gaza City's Sabra neighbourhood. Some bore photographs of the dead attached to the flags.
Gaza's Civil Defence spokesperson, Mahmoud Basal, said it took 17 days with minimal equipment to recover the remains of the 112 members of the Abu Sharia and Al-Hassayna families, killed in Israeli strikes on November 22, 2023.
Basal said victims had been identified through gold necklaces with their names, implants from previous surgeries and clothing recognised by relatives. More than 8,000 bodies remained under the rubble across Gaza, he added.
A relative of the victims, Taysir Al-Hassayna, said the day had brought sorrow back to the family.
"Stop this war. Stop these massacres against these poor people. The people of Gaza are a people who love life, who love peace and want to live in peace like all other peoples of the world," he said during the funeral procession.

"Today we are holding a funeral procession for more than 100 martyrs from the family of Abu Sharia and Al-Hassyna in a scene that truly has not been written in history, and in the history of the Palestinian cause. We are talking about these bodies that decomposed and were extracted by Civil Defense crews in truly difficult scenes and very heartbreaking scenes. But at the end of the day, we are talking about more than 8,000 bodies that are still under the rubble until this moment. We are talking about a great struggle by the Civil Defense crews, where there are no capacities, there are no tools. The crews worked with the minimum capacities and tools in order to recover these bodies.”

We are talking about... perhaps some characteristics are present on the bodies, through the family's recognition or the family's identification. Some of them were wearing gold necklaces bearing their names. Some of them had previous surgical operations and there was platinum inside their body, they were identified. Some of them were identified from the clothes that were seen during the retrieval operations.”
