Video shared to social media site X on Tuesday (July 28) shows the platform shaking at Oita Station, about 100 km (60 miles) northeast of Kumamoto, after a major earthquake struck Japan's southern Kumamoto Prefecture.

One hospital had reported more than 50 injuries, public broadcaster NHK said. Several people on a high-speed train at the time of the quake were also injured, Nikkei newspaper said.

Reuters was able to verify the location that the video was filmed at by matching shape and colour of train, internal beams and poles inside the station, tiles and markings of platform, and surrounding building which matched archive imagery of the area.

The date and location of the video were verified from the original file’s metadata. The video was filmed from coordinates 33.232800, 131.605600.

A video shot by an eyewitness onboard Japan's high-speed rail showed the train making an emergency stop after a major earthquake rocked southern Japan on Tuesday (July 28).

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 knocked out power to thousands of homes, snarling travel and triggering evacuation orders and warnings for aftershocks.

Reuters verified the location from the compartment interiors, light fixtures and windows seen in the video, which matched archive imagery of the Japanese high-speed rail. The location was further verified by the metadata on the original video file. The date when the video was recorded was also verified by the file metadata. The Japanese government also issued emergency earthquake warnings on July 28 for several southern prefectures, including Saga prefecture where the video was recorded.

A blast following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake caused extensive damage at an Aeon shopping mall in Kumamoto Prefecture.

NHK reported that multiple buildings, including the mall, were also damaged. A spokesperson for Aeon did not immediately have a comment on the situation.

The earthquake knocked out power to thousands of homes, ruptured roads, and injured at least 50 people across the prefecture.

Emergency crews were seen trying to douse large flames rising from burned out structures.

Aerial footage released by Japan's Ministry of Defence on Tuesday (July 28) showed smoke rising from a quake-hit area in southern Japan.

Around 300,000 people have been instructed to go to evacuation centres, the disaster management agency said. The quake’s epicentre was about 20 kilometres south of Kumamoto, central Kyushu island's largest city with a population of around 700,000.
