A family visiting Iceland hoping to see the total solar eclipse over the west of the country on Tuesday (August 11) said they were hoping for clear skies for the event, but looking forwards to it regardless of the weather.

Krista Kern, who is in Iceland with her family from North Carolina, said that her family had enjoyed the 2017 eclipse and were looking forward to seeing the August 12 event over western Iceland.

“It was just a really cool experience in 2017 when we did it. So we're excited to do it again,” she said.

Some forecasts have predicted rain around the Icelandic capital for August 12.

“We know the weather's a little iffy, but it'll be fun irrespective,” said Steve Lee, visiting from the United States.

A narrow path of totality will sweep across the westernmost part of Iceland, touching land first at around 17:44 local time.

While totality peaks at 2 minutes 13 seconds in the far Westfjords, most Icelanders in larger cities will see darkness fall for a shorter stretch of between 30 seconds to 1 minute and 40 seconds.
