STORY: Cali residents held a vigil on Monday (August 17) for the victims of the Colombia earthquake that has killed over 280 people. Priest Juan Diego Cadena said the event celebrated the lives of the victims of the 7.4-magnitude quake, which struck near San Jose del Palmar and caused widespread damage from the Pacific coast to Colombia's coffee-growing region a week ago. The quake toppled buildings in various parts of western Colombia, including the major cities of Cali and Pereira, killing 289 people, injuring more than 4,000, and leaving another 143 people missing. More than two-thirds of the reported deaths were concentrated in Cali and Pereira, where apartment buildings, homes, churches, schools and hospitals were damaged or destroyed. Organizer Mariana Molanos said the vigil's candle-lighting was meant to convey hope and resilience, showing that despite tragedy people can recover. "I believe that the greatest miracle we have witnessed in Colombia is seeing hundreds of Colombians, people from Cali, Manizales, and Pereira, rise up to rebuild our country," she added.
