M027-IRAN DECLARACION JAMENEI

Teheran, Irán

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said on his Telegram channel on Tuesday (May 26) that Gulf powers will no longer be a shield for United States bases and the U.S. will no longer have a safe haven in the region, as Tehran and Washington discuss a framework to end their three-month-old war.

His comments come as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday said that negotiating a deal with Iran could "take a few days," dimming hopes for an imminent end to the conflict after the U.S. conducted what it called defensive strikes in southern Iran.

2. (SOUNDBITE) (Farsi) IRIB NEWS CHANNEL ANCHOR READING MESSAGE OF IRANIAN SUPREME LEADER, MOJTABA HOSSEINI KHAMENEI (SOUNDBITE CONTINUES OVER SHOT 1):

"What is certain in this regard (cooperation of Islamic countries) is that the the clock cannot be turned back, and the nations and lands of the region will no longer be a shield for American bases. Moreover, America will no longer have a safe place in the region for mischief and the establishment of military bases, and day by day it will drift further from its former position. The shaky Zionist regime, too, will move closer to the end of its ominous existence. By the grace of God and in accordance with the decisive and forward-looking statement that the great, martyred leader—may his soul be sanctified—made ten years ago, they will not see twenty-five years past that date, God willing."
