An eyewitness video showed projectiles being fired in the air over Caracas city skyline on Monday (January 5) night in the wake of the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and capture of ousted president Nicolas Maduro.

Reuters was able to confirm the location from buildings, church, metro station, and rail tracks which matched with file and satellite imagery of the area. The date was confirmed by the vice minister of communications Simon Arrechider, who confirmed to journalists in a message that what happened in downtown Caracas was due to drones flying overhead without permission, and the police fired shots as a deterrent. "There was no confrontation, the entire country remains completely calm," Arrechider said in the message.

U.S. forces swooped into Caracas before dawn on Saturday (January 3) in a deadly raid that yielded the capture of Maduro, who the U.S. military turned over to federal authorities for prosecution on charges involving alleged drug trafficking.

Maduro, 63, pleaded not guilty in New York federal court to four criminal counts that include narco-terrorism, cocaine importation conspiracy and possession of machine guns and destructive devices.

Maduro's wife Cilia Flores also pleaded not guilty. The next court date was set for March 17.
