US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday (September 28) said there was a foreign actor involved in the apparent plot to attack an airbase used by the United States in the UK, without providing evidence or specifying details.

"What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation. It's one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor. I won't get into great detail about that yet," Rubio said on the Fox News network's "Hannity" program late on Monday.

British police said on Monday they were investigating whether individuals acting for a foreign state were involved in the plot, but said five suspects they had arrested would be released on bail.

The five men, all British nationals from London in their early 20s, were detained early on Sunday (September 27) after police were alerted by a local farmer about three white vans driving towards RAF Fairford, a British base that houses US bombers that fly missions against Iran.

"Well, let me preface by saying that I have to be careful, there's some things I cannot say on the air for a lot of different reasons. Suffice it to say that what happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation. It's one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor. I won't get into great detail about that yet. I do want to thank the authorities in the United Kingdom, who have been very cooperative and on top of it. I know a lot of people are disturbed by the news that some of these people have been released on bail as a... some of the people are being investigated, and obviously we're engaging with them on all of that. But suffice it to say that beyond that, I would argue that they've been very cooperative and very helpful on something that's very serious incident."
