M008-HONDURAS PROTESTAS POR RESULTADO ELECTORAL
STORY: Hundreds of supporters of the leftist Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre) demonstrated on Monday (December 29) outside the headquarters of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in Honduras' capital, rejecting the results of the country's recent presidential election.
Protesters chanted "vote by vote" and displayed banners demanding "all tally sheets to be counted" as they accused the electoral body of irregularities.
Former presidential candidate Rixi Moncada, appearing alongside former President and Libre Party general coordinator Manuel Zelaya, told the crowd that without proper vote counting and tally verification, "we don't recognise a president through fraud."
Nasry Asfura, the conservative candidate for Honduran president backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, was declared the winner last Wednesday (December 24) more than three weeks after the November 30 election, which was beset by delays, technical problems and allegations of fraud.
The Honduras electoral authority, known as the CNE, said Asfura won 40.3% of the vote, edging out centre-right Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla who garnered 39.5%. The candidate of the ruling LIBRE party, Rixi Moncada, came in a distant third.
