M006-UCRANIA RESCATES HERIDOS ESCOMBROS
STORY: Firefighters battled blazes in Kyiv on Tuesday (June 2), as residents picked through debris and charred cars, after Russian drones and missiles struck cities across Ukraine, killing at least 10 people and wounding about 100, officials said.
Footage from Kyiv’s State Emergency Services showed buildings engulfed in flames as rescuers worked to contain the fires. Reuters was able to confirm the location in parts of the video (0:09 - 0:14, 0:19 - 0:27, 0:44 - 0:46) from buildings and business signage which matched archive and satellite imagery of the area. The location in other parts of the video could not be verified. The date of the video was verified by local officials.
The attacks came after days of warnings that Moscow was planning a major assault.
Russia has targeted Ukraine's power supply and infrastructure in a war now more than four years old, while Ukraine has stepped up attacks this year on Russian oil facilities. Both deny targeting civilians.
Photographs showed large explosions and plumes of smoke billowing over high-rise buildings in Kyiv, where overnight strikes killed four people and wounded 58, including children, according to the capital's mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
Thousands seeking shelter flooded into the Kyiv subway system early on Tuesday, witnesses said, some carrying belongings and mattresses, as the sound of defence systems repelling Russian attacks filled the air.
More explosions were heard in the capital after dawn, a Reuters witness said.
