STORY: Some Kyiv residents endured a fourth day without power and heating on Monday (January 12), gathering at tents turned into aid points after Russian strikes.

Fuel-powered generators hummed outside shelters set up near apartment blocks, where people warmed up with tea and charged phones and power banks.

Kateryna Zubko, 67, said she had no electricity, heating or water in her apartment. With an electric stove, cooking became impossible.

Kyiv’s mayor said on Monday that nearly 800 buildings in the capital remain without heating, mainly on the West Bank of Dnipro, while supply has been restored elsewhere. He added that repair crews work around the clock after last week’s massive attack damaged infrastructure.

However, some people on the East Bank were also without heat, they told Reuters at aid points.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday (January 11) that Russia deliberately waited for freezing weather to make things worse for the Ukrainian people, and this was "a cynical Russian terror specifically against civilians." Moscow gave no immediate response.

In an address on Monday, Zelenskiy said Russia is preparing another large-scale attack.
