Asunción, Uruguay

Paraguay fans in Asuncion celebrated on Monday (June 29) after their national team eliminated Germany from the World Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw.

Goalkeeper Orlando Gill saved penalties from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade, while Jonathan Tah missed for Germany, sealing the result against the four-time world champions.

Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead in the 42nd minute before Havertz equalized for Germany in the 54th, sending the match to extra time and then penalties.

Paraguay supporters in Asuncion said the team had shown courage and the ability to beat major opponents, while a German fan at the gathering congratulated Paraguay and said the South American side had shown more heart than his team.

A social media post from Paraguayan President Santiago Pena announced a holiday for the following day after the win.

Paraguay was set to face the winner of the France-Sweden match in the round of 16.

The result marked one of Paraguay's most significant World Cup victories and followed its previous best tournament performance in 2010, when it reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.
