Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Oman on Monday (June 22), to discuss joint efforts to consolidate Iranian arrangements for managing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi welcomed Qalibaf and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Muscat upon their arrival.

Qalibaf said on Monday that Tehran has agreed to have a communication line regarding ship passage in the strait of Hormuz to avoid conflict and incidents in the strategic waterway.

Speaking to state TV after talks with U.S. officials in Switzerland, the negotiator said the sides agreed to set up coordination mechanisms. Those include a hotline and a center to resolve any ambiguity or dispute, allowing vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz more safely and efficiently during a 30-day period under Article 5.

“In compliance with all international laws here, with the Iranian arrangements that are actually mentioned in Article 5. Of course, just as there may still be issues in Lebanon and elsewhere, there are also issues in the Strait of Hormuz. As you have seen, there have even been clashes on some nights. We agreed to establish coordination mechanisms there, including a hotline and a centre that can be contacted whenever there is any ambiguity or dispute. During this 30-day period, under Article 5, the parties will be able to maintain close coordination so that vessels transiting the Strait can do so more safely and efficiently. God willing, this will help improve traffic flows and shipping volumes through the Strait, boost the regional economy, support the global economy, and allow us to move forward.”
