STORY: Indonesian rescuers were racing on Tuesday (September 30) to find 38 people feared trapped beneath the rubble of an Islamic boarding school that collapsed in East Java, killing three, according to disaster officials.
Ninety-nine others survived Monday's (September 29) collapse at the Al Khoziny boarding school in Sidoarjo, a town about 780 km (480 miles) east of Jakarta, according to Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency.
Nanang Sigit, a local search and rescue official, said authorities would not use heavy equipment for fear of causing the remaining structure to collapse.
The disaster mitigation agency said the building's foundations allegedly could not support the weight of construction on its fourth floor.

"The number of students that were on the site were 140, and we've evacuated 102 so there are still 38 stuck under the rubble of the collapsed building. Of course, at the moment we are still considering the missing as alive, so we're focusing our search and evacuation efforts on creating access to the first level of the building to reach the victims."

"Today, our target is rescuing one victim who's able to communicate verbally with us. However to reach this target we need to prioritise safety. Our challenge with collapsed buildings are the instability of the building materials which could collapse again on survivors or even rescue teams."
