STORY: Relatives, friends, and lawmakers gathered at the Colombian Congress in Bogota on Monday (August 11) for a farewell ceremony honoring Senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay.

Uribe, 39, had been vying for his party’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections but died two months after being shot in the head at a campaign rally.

Authorities have arrested six people over the killing, including two men who, according to the attorney general’s office, met in Medellin to plan the assassination. The attack was the deadliest act of political violence in the country in nearly two decades.

His casket, draped with the Colombian flag and surrounded by white flowers, was carried into the Congress’ Elliptical Hall by military personnel and placed before the podium. Mourners, including Uribe’s wife, Claudia Tarazona, his father, and his stepdaughters, stood close to the coffin, embracing and crying.

In the evening, mourners held a candlelight vigil at the site where Uribe was shot, praying beside a photograph of him placed next to a statue of the Virgin Mary.
