STORY: Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro gathered to pray at a vigil outside his residence in Brasilia on Monday (September 1), a day ahead of his legal battle at the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

About 20 supporters, including two of Bolsonaro’s sons Carlos and Renan Bolsonaro, attended the event. People were seen crying as they held banners and prayed for divine intervention.

Brazil's Supreme Court will on Tuesday(September 2) begin hearing closing arguments in the trial of Bolsonaro, who faces charges of plotting a coup to remain in power after he lost the 2022 election. Bolsonaro, who was president of Brazil between 2019 and 2022, was charged with trying to cling to power after he lost his reelection bid to leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Brazil's top prosecutor accused Bolsonaro of orchestrating a plot that included a plan to poison Lula and his running mate and kill Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw the 2022 elections as the top judge on Brazil's electoral court.
