"I was working inside my store Metro Marche and at the moment, at that time, I saw people running from down the block this way all the way over here. So I obviously went outside to see what happened. I saw police shortly after that come this way. Ambulance, police, fire truck, everything coming this way. After that, I saw a group, a bunch of people group and crowded around here this area to see what was going on. We saw, I saw a person, a guy on the floor. He was laid out, I don't know what happened to him. I don't know if he got shot, but there was a guy laying on the floor. They tried to give him CPR. He didn't get up. They put him in the ambulance. I think he's... I don't know if they took him, but yeah, I had to go back to work. But thank you."

New York mayor Eric Adams reported on Monday evening that the shooter who opened fire inside a Manhattan skyscraper had been "neutralized".

Adams said in a video message posted on X that there were "multiple injuries" as a result of the shooting. He also advised that while the shooter had been neutralised, people who were in the building should stay where they were.

“Y’all this is mayor Eric Adams and i’m here at the scene of 51st and Park Avenue. Unfortunately, we had a shooting here, with multiple injuries. The perpetrator, the known perpetrator, is neutralised at this time. Those who are in the building, we’re asking you to remain inside as police officers are doing a four by four search. We believe, again, the perpetrator is neutralised at this time. I’ll be going over to the hospital to speak with family and loved ones involved in this incident. We did have a shooter, with multiple injuries at this time but the perpetrator is neutralised.”

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said he was “heartbroken” by the Midtown shooting that occurred on Monday, expressing support for the victims, their families, and the critically injured NYPD officer in a post on X. He also thanked first responders for their work at the scene.

The New York Post newspaper, citing unnamed police sources, reported that a gunman wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle had opened fire inside the Park Avenue skyscraper, wounding a police officer and a bystander. The Post reported they were in critical condition.

A large police presence converged on the area around the tower, according to Reuters journalists near the scene.

Police did not immediately make details of the shooting public, but a law enforcement source told Reuters that one New York Police Department officer was killed, two civilians were struck by gunfire and the suspect was believed to be dead.

Kyle Marshall, 38, was working at a Morgan Stanley office in a nearby building on Park Avenue when his mother texted him, alerting him to an active shooter incident, and asked if he was OK. "Then she texted me the address and I was like, 'oh my God, that's like right next door to my building," he said.

One of the four victims slain in the gun attack, described as "senseless" by New York City Mayor Eric Adams, was a 36-year-old New York Police Department officer, Didarul Islam, who had been on the force for about 3 1/2 years. The three others killed by the suspect were civilians.
