STORY: A plane carrying Congo's mining minister crashed upon landing on Monday (November 17), with no casualties being reported according to an official statement.
Dramatic footage shot from inside the plane showed the moment it crashed as it landed in the country's southeastern city of Kolwezi, capital of Lualaba province, on Monday. The video uploaded to social media showed the plane on final approach before crashing upon touch down and skidding into dirt.
Reuters was able to confirm the location by the tarmac layout, buildings, and terrain seen in the video which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. The position of the plane after stopping matched corroborating footage from the scene. The date has been verified by the official statement from the DRC’s Ministry of Mines saying that an incident occurred at Kolwezi Airport on Monday.
According to the statement, the Minister of Mines, Louis Watum Kabamba was travelling to the site of a fatal accident at a semi-industrial copper mine in Lualaba province on Saturday (November 15) where a bridge collapsed, killing around 30 people according to the country's artisanal mining agency.
