Rescue workers searched through rubble for survivors of a collapsed building after a powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday (August 10), with more than 100 people killed in the country's strongest earthquake this century.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.4-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 107 km (66 miles). The Colombian Geological Service said it had recorded 21 aftershocks by late Monday and warned that additional tremors were likely.

Colombia sits along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire and records thousands of mostly minor earthquakes each month.

“Several parts of the city have been affected, with structural damage. We have hospitals and schools that have been badly affected. The entire Cali Fire Department was deployed with all its capabilities. We are at different locations, trying to reach every last area and verify whether there are signs of life.”

"This morning we rescued three people, two males and one female, alive. They were transported to a medical facility. The other information we had was that there were two minors trapped at the site, so we directed all our personnel and our work toward that. Now, at almost 4 p.m., we are bringing this operation here to an end. We did not find anyone else.”
