Visitors at Portugal's capital of Lisbon tried to stay away from scorching sun on Monday (June 30) as an early heatwave hit southern Europe.

People said they were seeking shade and drinking plenty of water in Lisbon.

"It's been very difficult for us to handle the heat, because in the UK we generally don't get this much heat," said tourist from the United Kingdom, Jan Jones, as she was walking by downtown Lisbon.

In southeast Portugal's town of Mora, temperature rose to 46.6 C on Sunday (June 29), setting a new record high for June in the country, exceeding the previous record of 44.9 C in 2017.

Weather service IPMA put five districts in central and southern Portugal, including Lisbon where thermometers could hit 41 C, on red alert for high temperatures on Monday.
