A lion escaped from a zoo in southern tourist town of Manavgat and was shot dead after wounding a farmer on Sunday (July 6).

Farmer Suleyman Kir who was sleeping at their farm with his wife was attacked by the male lion named Zeus in the early hours of the morning which had escaped from a zoo called Land of Lions in Manavgat.

Kir's wife Gulperi Kir said at first they thought it was a rat. Wounded on his neck, legs and ear, Kir said he had a struggle with the lion and forced it to flee.

A social media footage showed night images of a lion walking in front of a tractor. Reuters was not able to confirm the date or location the video was filmed.

Local governor said the lion was shot dead after attempts to captured it alive failed. The zoo was closed after the incident.

"It was around half past four or five in the morning. We were asleep with my wife but we heard a noise. I had a blanket on top of me. When I opened the blanket the lion jumped on top of me. We had a long struggle and I shouted for help. It bit my legs, bit my neck. I grabbed it by the neck and choked. It ran away for ten meters."
