L646-KENIA PROTESTA
Protesters turned out in Nairobi on Monday (July 7) despite a heavy police presence and roadblocks in the city centre. Crowds gathered in defiance of a security clampdown aimed at stopping anti-government demonstrations.
The protests coincided with the anniversary of the 1990 'Saba Saba' rally, a landmark demonstration that helped push Kenya toward multiparty democracy.
Kenyan police opened fire on a charging crowd of protesters, a Reuters reporter said, with one man subsequently seen lying motionless on the road with a visible bloodied wound.
Throughout the morning, anti-riot police patrolled the streets, deploying tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators, while heavily armed officers stood guard near armoured vehicles.
Streets were strewn with stones and spent tear gas canisters as protesters regrouped in various parts of the city. Despite the crackdown, protesters have continued to face off with police under a sustained and heavy security presence.
