Death toll from Texas floods reaches 67, total number of missing still unclear

SHOWS: The U.S. Coast Guard released footage on Sunday (July 6) of its air crews rescuing people from flash flooding in Texas on Friday (July 4). Twelve flights were conducted around the Kerrville area by the Coast Guard, who said they rescued 15 people from Camp Mystic on Friday.

Rescuers on Saturday (July 5) continued a frantic search for dozens of campers, vacationers and residents who were still missing. Hardest hit by the flooding was Camp Mystic, a nearly century-old girls camp, where dozens of young girls were swept away in the floodwaters, leaving many dead and 27 still missing. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said there were 700 girls in the residence of the camp at the time of the flood.

Homes lie in ruins in the wake of deadly Guadalupe River flash floods. The floods left a trail of devastation in communities along the river, as the high waters flattened homes, and uprooted giant trees.
Early morning video from Kerrville on Sunday (July 6) revealed a landscape dotted with piles of broken branches and debris from destroyed properties and vehicles.

Larry Leitha, the Kerr County Sheriff in Texas Hill Country, the epicenter of the flooding, said the death toll in Kerr County had reached 59, including the 21 children.
Leitha said 11 girls and a counsellor remained missing from a summer camp near the Guadalupe River, which broke its banks after torrential rain fell in the central Texas area on Friday, the U.S. Independence Day holiday.

"As of 9 a.m. (local time) this morning, we recorded 59 deceased in Kerr County. Among those who are deceased, we have 38 adults and 21 children. 18 adults pending identification and four children are also pending identification. At present, there are 11 Camp Mystic campers unaccounted for, along with one counsellor. We extend our sincerest condolences and prayers for every single family affected by this tragedy."
