STORY: A timelapse video filmed by an eyewitness on Sunday (July 20) showed the dramatic arrival of a massive dark cloud in the skies above Zhuhai city in Guangdong province as Typhoon Wipha made landfall.
Reuters was able to confirm the location from the buildings, water body, urban layout and terrain which match satellite and file images. The date was confirmed by the time Typhoon Wipha landed in Zhuhai, as well as local government-released alerts on its WeChat account on Sunday (July 20).
Storms drenched southern parts of the Chinese mainland on Monday (July 21), triggering warnings of flash floods and landslides, a day after the typhoon pounded Hong Kong where it felled trees and scaffolding, grounded flights and sent nearly 280 people into shelters.
Heavy rain lashed the cities of Yangjiang, Zhanjiang and Maoming in China's southern province Guangdong after the storm system made landfall on Sunday evening.
China's national forecaster said it had weakened to a tropical storm upon landfall, and forecast it to skirt the coast of Guangdong and move southwesterly towards Vietnam.
Heavy rain is forecast for mainland Chinese coastal regions such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Fujian until Tuesday (July 22) morning, with warnings of flash floods, landslides and wind hazards.
